Creativity is central to being human. Religion has often thought of God as the only creator, but creativity also happens outside the religious context. This speaker series explores the spirit of creativity from non-religious perspectives as significant leaders in the arts - dance, theatre, painting, poetry and music -  share their own sense of the sprit of their art.

About Jane Coop

Jane is one of Canada’s most prominent and distinguished artists, and has performed in over twenty countries, in such eminent halls as the Bolshoi in St. Petersburg, Alice Tully Hall in New York, and the Salle Gaveau in Paris. In our own country she has given concerts in many, many cities, towns and communities in between.

Coop’s love of chamber music has led her to collaborate with artists from many parts of the world. Her longtime association with violinist Andrew Dawes, and her more recent partnership with cellist Antonio Lysy have given her the opportunity to delve into the sonata literature of Beethoven, a body of music to which she feels particularly drawn.

Her commitment to teaching is centred around UBC’s School of Music, where she was a senior professor and Head of the Piano Division. She was the founding Artistic Director of the Young Artists’ Experience – a summer chamber music program for students aged 14 to 18 held at UBC. Its mandate was, and still is, to give young people a broad exposure to art and life.

Her sixteen recordings, three of which have been nominated for Juno awards, have garnered glowing reviews and have been heard on classical radio programs in many countries.

In December 2012, Jane Coop was appointed to the Order of Canada, our country’s highest honour for lifetime achievement.
